Okay, it's ON

This week is the OFFICIAL first week of our regimented training. After a lot of back and forth up to the last minute, we have decided on different versions of Hal Higdon Novice plans.

Rich is doing Novice 1; I'm doing Novice 2

It's midweek and I'm happy to say, so far so good. Rich convinced me that any plan having us run both weekend days was just too unrealistic for our first marathon...and the fact that it's summertime.... oh, right and we just bought our first boat.

I resisted at first - really wanted to push myself with the Intermediate I plan but decided he's right - it's better to aim a bit "realistic" and run more if we need to - vs. aiming high and feeling guilt that I'm not keeping up. I have enough pressure in life!

So far this week we've met our goals:
Monday: cross train (Rich did "carry water liter" - don't ask; I did kettle ball and Abs of Steel.)
Tuesday: Rich 3; Chris 4.5
Wednesday: Rich 3; Chris 5 @ pace

Questions of the week:
1) What are the top 3 items you carry with you on long runs?
2) Do you listen to music when you run the actual race?
3) How many miles do you get out of a pair of shoes?

during long runs I usually carry my ipod, some GU and a fuel belt with 1/2 water and 1/2 gatorade.

Most organized marathons will not let you listen to ipods during the race, so check with the Dublin Race to make sure.

Shoes are good for usually about 300 miles or so depending on the surfaces you run on, your weight etc....I would recommend having two pairs of shoes for the training phase so you can rotate them and not run in the same pair each time and then buy one pair just for the race and break it in with about 20 miles of running before race day. That way the cushioning is fresh for race day.

Good luck with your training. I also used and like the Hal Higdon programs although I did not do any cross training.

Long runs I wear my Road ID (all runs), I listen to my iPod Shuffle sometimes, and always have Clif Shotblocks on me. I keep my water, Gatorade (diluted) at my car and plan my runs so that I can swing by without having to carry it.

I agree that alternating shoes is an excellent idea. 300 miles sounds like a reasonable number, actually mileage will vary for each individual and brand of shoes.

Redbaron thanks for the advice, you are always a great source of info. You joining us in Ireland or what?

Jeff - this is very interesting. Love the idea that you put everything you need in your car. One question, is it because you go run on trails? Why do that instead of just running by your home? Just curious.

What is a RoadID?

Thanks for reading!
