On my long run this weekend (self imposed of 10 miles), I decided to try GU energy gel - the package said to take one 15 minutes before the run and then every 45. So I took one before the run and literally - it gagged me. Gagged me. Ugh. All that gooey, thick paste stuck on the top of my mouth while I tried to quickly wash it down with water... are you kidding me? If I tried to pop one of those 45 minutes into my run I would seriously puke.
Luckily, I had a backup to try. I had previously purchased one (sadly, only one) package of Luna Sport Moons energy chews. I was hesitant
because they look like like fruit snacks and that could get complicated while running - all that chewing - and I wasn't sure if they'd really give me an energy boost. Sometimes things are gross for a reason, ya know?
I am happy to report that these lovely little bites seemed to work and they tasted great. Unless I find something better I am going to keep running with these (as long as I can find them - that's not been easy so far).
Have you tried anything besides GU? What about PowerBar Gel Blasts? Have any other recommendations based on your own experiences?

Dunno how well they'd keep during a marathon, but bananas kick ass during and after long (2+ hrs), technical and body-beating mountain bike races. They give halves out at intervals along the course. Lots of potassium and other simple sugars the bod needs for its furnace.
While I'll be... a natural solution. Now that is a nice recommendation. I guess we could cut them up and carry them in a baggie or something for the race. I'll have to try it during one of our training runs.
Thanks Joel!
Ditto that for the Gu - Yuch!! Luckily like you I tested these before a run and not during one. It looks like the Luna is similar to the Clif Shot Bloks.
I really have a hard time eating on the run.
I don't like the Gu either, or the Hammer Gels. I use Clif Shots - and just the Chocolate version (I don't really like the others). Besides being organic without all the artificial stuff in them, I can stomach them pretty well.
Clif Bloks work well, but I am not used to the chewing and worry I will just breathe one down. I may switch to them - but the Clif Shots have worked for me.
During the Marine Corps Marathon I snacked on some Sport beans - if you like Jelly beans, these seemed ok.
hey chris and rich - glad to hear your training is going well! a thought on the goo situation. i like power gel better than the GU brand, and i've definitely used the clif shot blocks a lot. good advice i've gotten, though, is to figure out what they'll be handing out at the actual race - both in terms of drinks and goos - and then train with those. unless you plan on carrying your own stuff race day.
thirst - good advice! mike M., you too. We decided to try them all and ordered all of the above (less the bananas, of course) from zombierunning.com (thanks to @keeponrunning (on Twitter) and his advice. We'll let you know what works for each of us, too, once we get to those long runs.
Do they post on marathon sites what they'll be handing out? That is very good advice!
